The region of Valle d’ Aosta is located in the far northwest corner of Italy. This mountainous region borders with France to the west, Switzerland to the north and the region of Piemonte to the south and east. It is the smallest and least populated region in Italy and the only one with no provinces. Aosta is the capital city. Italian and French are the official languages of this region, but a dialect of German origin is spoken in some villages in the Lys Valley. Valle d’ Aosta is one of five Italian regions that have special, autonomous status. Valle d’Aosta is an Alpine valley with smaller side valleys surrounded by spectacular mountains, including the Italian slopes of Monte Bianco and the Matterhorn. The region is dotted with villages, ancient towns and castles. Valle d’ Aosta is a popular destination for skiers, who enjoy great resorts such as Courmayeur, which is located in the Gran Paradiso National Park. The Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso was the first National Park in Italy. This region also offers an ideal setting for other outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain climbing, rafting and kayaking.
