This region is rich with cultural, artistic and historic sites. Naples is filled with churches, palaces, convents and monasteries, whereas the magnificent Baroque style Palazzo Reale with its and vast park are in nearby Caserta. The National Museum in Naples houses one of the best archaeological collections in the world and the ancient ruins of Pompei and Herculeum sit at the base of Mount Vesuvius, which dominates the entire area around the Gulf of Naples.
The Amalfi Coast is just south of Naples along the southern side of the Sorrentine peninsula. With colorful seaside towns clinging to the cliffs, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most scenic coastal areas of Italy. Nearby Capri Island is another world famous destination. There are a number of Greek ruins in Campania, including Paestum further south along the Cilento Coast.
