The region of Abruzzo is located in central Italy. It borders with Marche to the north, Lazio to the west, Molise to the southwest and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The Appenine Mountains run through Abruzzo, which is about two-thirds mountainous. Aquila is the capital city of Abruzzo. There are four provinces in this region: Aquila, Chieti, Pescara and Teramo. There are many National and Regional Parks in Abruzzo. These protected areas are home to native flora and fauna, including the Orso Bruno (Brown Bear). There are a number of well-preserved hill towns in Abruzzo, including Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte, which are both located in the Gran Sasso National park.
